This is not the first time we have tested the SteelSeries, a well-known manufacturer of gaming headsets. And each time, we’re surprised to see how much the gaming headset category has changed over the years. Another example of favorable change is the Junior Wire SteelSeries Arctis 1.

The Arctis 1 SteelSeries is a simplified version of the company’s high-end gaming headsets. This simplification is related to wireless capabilities. Arctis 1 also resembles the more expensive gaming headsets’ sound quality as far as sound reproduction is concerned. Without the removable ClearCast microphone, they could be confused with ordinary music headphones.

3. Package

Overall 4/5

SteelSeries Arctis 1 comes in a typical SteelSeries box, white and orange. On the front, there’s a picture of the headset, including its wireless compatibility. It is also mentioned that the connection method is 2.4 GHz, not Bluetooth and that it uses a USB-C dongle. The back shows that it’s wireless compatible with PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Android smartphones. On the other side are displayed the main features of the headset.

Inside the package, Arctis 1 comes with the following accessories: USB-C Dongle, micro USB charging cable, cable with 3.5 mm jack plug, a USB adapter cable to connect the dongle to the computer, and a user manual. Even though this is an entry-level package, it is actually an entry-level package.

4. Design & Ergonomy

Overall 4/5

The Arctis 1 Wireless Headset is a 4-in-1 model compatible with a computer or phone in wireless mode, including the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch. To use it in wireless mode, simply plug in the small transmitter and start playing. Also, in wired mode, you can connect the headset to any device using a plug.

This model is made with neat materials and an average design with black and matte plastic for a gaming headset. The ear cushions are equipped with two large memory pads, just like the ones in the headband. The headband is reinforced with a steel band, but the headsets’ weight is so light that you can barely feel the weight on your head. The fit is so nice that players who spend a lot of time in front of the monitors won’t have to worry about excessive pressure on the ear cushions or headband fatigue. Music lovers will also appreciate the Arctis 1’s perfect fit and the blocking of outside noises.

The headset is quite light, and when you wear it, you will quickly forget it. After a few hours of play, you won’t notice any pressure points, so it’s just as capable as the regular Steelseries. The ear foam is thick enough to cover your ears, and the foam is soft enough so you won’t feel uncomfortable, even when you wear glasses. The gaming headset can also be rotated 90 degrees flat to facilitate around the neck wearing.

The design is exactly the same as the Arctis 1 wireless headphones, but without the cable, so nothing innovative about it. It goes without saying that the quality and exemplary work that has gone into this design and construction is fantastic. The all-plastic construction doesn’t look nice without the metal stand, but it also doesn’t squeak when picked up.

The microphone jack and all controls are located on the left earcup. There is an on/off button for the microphone and a signal level controller. The latter has a bi-directional design and is Discord certified – the 3.5 mm mini-jack cable is 1.5 m long, with an extension cord attached.

On the right earcup, there’s also a multifunction button that allows you to do the following.

  • Press once: Pause/hang up or answer the call.
  • Double press: go to the next song
  • Press the key three times: back to the previous song
  • These functions are available on your computer and on your phone.

The headset has a 3m cable that allows you to play video games and move around freely. The SteelSeries Arctis 1 cable’s specifications display a nominal impedance of 32 ohms and a sensitivity of 100dB, so there are no volume and noise problems when using a portable source. There are no noise or volume problems when using a portable source.

5. Microphone

The SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless features a high-quality microphone. Thanks to ClearCast technology, background noise is suppressed, and your conversation partner enjoys the high-quality sound. The playback quality is also very nice, with no delays.

The microphone is ClearCast Discord certified, like all Arctis headsets, so it’s a nice choice. Thanks to its bi-directional design, the noise reduction is nice, and the sound is really clear and crisp. Furthermore, note that the microphone is detachable, allowing you to move around wearing a regular headphone that doesn’t look like a gaming headset.

6. Bluetooth & Technology

With wireless headsets, the initial pairing can usually be a little tricky. This is not the case; everything happens very quickly and, most importantly, automatically. The battery life is 20 hours, decent for a budget gaming headset. On the other hand, a full charge doesn’t take more than 5 hours! The wireless connection has a range of up to 9 meters, which gives you plenty of space in front of your computer or console.

The headphones are, of course, compatible with the Steelseries Engine 3 software. As with the entire Arctis lineup, the sound is very consistent. The SteelSeries’ Engine 3 EQ can adapt to any situation, whether you’re playing games, listening to music, or watching a movie. You can adapt to it. My only criticism is that the bass isn’t very loud, so it can be a little frustrating in certain situations, like game shots or action scenes in movies.

You don’t have that feeling when it comes to music. Even with a custom EQ, it’s hard to make the bass louder. But the strange thing is that when I listen to music on my phone, the bass is more present and even sounds better on my phone when I watch Netflix Style! I believe that.

Overall, however, the sound is well balanced, and you won’t have any problems identifying the source of the sound or estimating its distance because the highs and mids are well-tuned.

7. Sound Quality

The Arctis 1 gaming solution from SteelSeries combines the advantages of its most expensive model: very precise positioning of the image in space and excellent clarity. Multiplayer communication is clear at all times, even though there were shootings and noisy environments. In-game players voice stood out from the situation.

The sound quality of Arctis 1 is an even bigger surprise of the whole package. The gaming headset exceeds any expectations when listening to music. So good sound quality from a gaming headset is hardly a thing, let alone a cheap one, so we could hear what the sound director thought, but we liked Arctis 1.

We then realized that the great sound performance is reproduced by the same 40 mm dynamic drivers with a neodymium magnet system as the company’s more expensive models. The pure, tight bass didn’t overshadow the rest of the spectrum, and the vocals were completely free from the harsh mold conditions that often plague the cheapest headphones.

The audio signal can be described as perfectly balanced, and it can be said that this model is also suitable for “audiophile” headphones in this price range. The volume control in the cups works very accurately and precisely. However, if you are listening to music, we recommend that you set the volume to maximum and adjust it to the amplifier’s level to which the headphones are connected. At this point, you will be able to take full advantage of the Arctis 1 Steel Series benefits.

8. Conclusion

Overall 4.2/5

SteelSeries desired to create a headset that would show that it belongs to the gaming scene, has an attractive look and a quality sound. All these at a low-cost. With plenty of ambition and zeal, the company succeeded.

The SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless shines in quality: it has the same high-end drivers as the Arctis 7, one of the SteelSeries’ high-end headsets, and plays appealingly during gameplay thanks to a nice balance of high, mid, and low frequencies for realistic sound. Compared to the previous budget gaming headsets, Arctis 1 benefits from a dramatic increase in sound reproduction quality and a general rise in demand from players. After all, when playing multiplayer games, it is imperative to understand your environment, listen clearly to your partner, and not be left out of the communication.

Besides the wireless conversion, the Arctis 1 Wireless retains all its wired brother features in terms of sound quality and comfort. However, the major drawback of switching to wireless technology is that it’s twice as expensive as the wired version.
