Beyerdynamic Lagoon is available in two versions, which differ only in the color of the ear cushions and headband cushions:
- Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC Traveler – black;
- Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC Explorer – brown finish.
The Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC headphones came to me in an elegant and expensive package. The pleasing presentation of the package is enticing for a mid-range NC headset.
Inside the box, you will find a hard carrying case, a pair of Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC headphones, a 70 cm USB Type-C charging cable, and a 1.2 m long 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm cable for analog connection.
Headphone’s ear cups rotate 90 degrees to fit in the case. Inside, there is enough space to contain the necessary cables. If you do not want to use the case for some reason, then the Beyerdynamic Lagoon has a folding mechanism – the cups fold up inside the headband, and the headphones become compact enough to fit in a backpack.

The design of the headphones is stylish and modern. The body is made of high quality dark gray plastic with black inserts. For added rigidity, a metal plate is integrated into the headband. Enough clamping force ensures a snug fit without putting too much pressure on the head.
Beyerdynamic Lagoon’s body is mainly built of plastic. The headband is reinforced with a metal plate hidden under the plastic. Apart from that, everything is plastic. The build is sturdy, the plastic does not creak at all, and the closed-back design provides great sound insulation. The headband has no automatic adjustment system. You can adjust the size manually up to 4 cm.
The earpads are soft and pliant, filled with memory foam, and have an anatomical shape. Thanks to the shape of the earcups matching the ears, the headphones sit very comfortably on the head. On the outside, the ear cushions and headband are covered with faux leatherette (eco-leather). An added bonus is the fact that the ear pads are replaceable. Due to the wear and tear of the artificial leather, you do not need to buy new headphones; you just need to purchase new ear pads.
On the outside are the company logo and a touch panel for control. The music control is really excellent, with the control keys responding perfectly to touch, even better than Sony’s headphones. All controls and connectors are located on the right earpiece:
- Type-C connector for charging.
- 5 mm jack for wired connection.
- Switch on/off and Bluetooth wireless connection.
- Built-in microphone.
- 3-level ANC switch.
A LED indicator will tell the user the state of the headphones. Depending on its behavior, the “Light Guide System” lighting system, abbreviated as “LGS,” will provide you with the following information:
- Battery level 0% – 30% – pulsating red.
- Battery Level 31% – 70% – Pulsing Yellow.
- Battery level 71% – 99% – pulsating green.
- A full charge (100%) – solid green.
- The battery is almost empty – 4 red flashes.
- Bluetooth pairing mode – left and right cups flash blue alternately.
- Bluetooth connection established – solid orange light.
- Bluetooth connection lost – slow blue blinking with 3-second pauses.
- Media playback – continuous orange light.
- Incoming call – fast blinking blue with 1-second pauses.
The Light system is optimized correctly; thus, it only works when you don’t listen to music. Intuitively, when you put the headset on the head, the LEDs turn off automatically. It saves precious time and makes using the headset even more enjoyable on the go. Additionally, the developers have equipped this model with voice prompts.

Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC doesn’t benefit from the latest here – 4.2. Nonetheless, the 5th version does improve the sound in any way, only helps with battery consumption. The headset still supports aptX, aptX Low-Latency, AAC codecs, and, of course, SBC. No aptX HD in the set. Still, for that, there is aptX LL, which allows you to enjoy video content/games without an offset between picture and sound, which is characteristic of the vast majority of wireless headphones.
Pairing with the source is normal/simple, but NFC supports one-touch pairing (like Sony and Sennheiser). Simultaneous work with two sources at once is supported. When paired via Bluetooth, the autonomy indicated by these headphones is outstanding: up to 25 hours with ANC on and up to 45 hours without ANC.
Headphone control is hybrid: the right cup has a sensor to control the volume/playback/calls and two toggle switches for powering on/off and ANC. Beyerdynamic allows precise adjustment of the touch surface using its dedicated MOSAYC MIY App on the App Store and the Google Play Store to make it even more responsive. The sensor’s sensitivity can be adjusted in the application, though it’s intuitive and convenient enough without any adjustments. A sensor in Lagoon ANC automatically pauses playback if you remove the headphones from your head.
For maximum speech intelligibility when using the headphones as a headset, they support Qualcomm CVC technology. Voice transmission is good in both directions, better than most headset headphones.

Are these Lagoon ANC headphones worth compared to those from Bose or Sony? Bose QC 35 II is an excellent headset, primarily for its active noise reduction. For a first attempt by Beyerdynamic in creating an on-ear noise canceling headphone, Lagoon ANC’s result is rather convincing! Just like what Bose offers on its QC 35 II.
There are three active noise canceling (ANC) modes: off, ANC I (average), and ANC II (maximum). There is no “transparent” mode, similarly to Sony WH-1000XM3’s.
“ANC I” cuts down on the outside world’s low frequencies while “ANC II” blocks out ambient noise around you. Even though the power of canceling noises is not as similar to that of Sony or Bose. Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC effectively suppresses ambient noise and is a fantastic headset for traveling by public transport.
In many conditions, ANC performed as asked. As the music is being played in the earcups, the surroundings’ noise is turned into silence by the noise-canceling Beyerdynamic Lagoon processor. If you turn on music – even at low volume, very few sounds will be heard.

As a leading hi-fi specialist that created a large variety of studio headphones for professionals and great-sounding headphones for audiophiles, Beyerdynamic is a company from which expectations aren’t low.
For the best sound reproduction, the brand has equipped the Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC Bluetooth headphones with high-end components, starting with two dynamic transducers 40 mm in diameter, offering very high sound clarity over the entire reproduced spectrum, which extends from 10 Hz to 30,000 Hz.
If you’ve listened to both Bose QC 35 and Sony’s WH-1000XM3, you’ll, too, conclude that Lagoon ANC wins this round. The headphones are very pure in terms of sound reproduction and overall balance. You won’t get tired of Beyerdynamic Lagoon’s bass as it happens with the muddy and heavy lows of WH-1000XM3; thus, you can enjoy electronic music, rap, pop, hip-hop, and even metal as long as you want.
The headphones display excellent results across the entire frequency range, from the top, where the sound is rich, to the bottom, among the dynamic and powerful basses. Unlike numerous competitors, the basses here do not try to draw all the attention. They sound natural and close to the original recording. Beyerdynamic’s Lagoon ANC delivers a balanced sound with great detail.
To optimize the sound reproduction even further according to the user’s preferences, the noise reduction headphones Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC provides an application from which it is possible to adjust various audio parameters and change the sound response. The app can also adapt to your hearing ability to hear the entire sound image delivered.
These might not be the best noise canceling headphones that cut through noises. Still, their versatility in playing multiple music genres should be awarded. It can play soulful, calm, melancholic, and soothing tracks as much as rough, raging, and full of energy songs of the heavy metal loaded with riffs and solos. The headphones can play almost every genre, though they won’t perform with excellent any. You can play FLAC audio files with high-resolution, but it won’t get you as far as Sennheiser HD 660. Though, unlike HD 660, Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC is intended for other purposes.

Comfortable, elegant, and efficient, the Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC Bluetooth noise-canceling headphones are a top choice for fully enjoying your music on public transport, at the office, or at home.
Its long battery life of 45 hours without noise reduction or 24-25 hours with noise reduction activated assures with battery for an entire day. Lagoon ANC provides plenty of playtime with ANC turned on. However, what we regret is that Beyerdynamic has not integrated an ambient mode in its headphones, which would allow, just like with the Sony WH-1000XM3, to hear the world without constantly rotating or removing the headphones.
The Beyerdynamic on-ear headset used to cost $400-$450, which is why most people were quite disappointed by the price to noise-canceling efficiency ratio, and you’ll see reviews with ratings of 4 or 4.5. However, as they’ve been heavily discounted, the luxury on-ear wireless headphones are now available for under $250—a price more in-line with the headset’s quality, which puts Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC Traveller on the spot for many consumers looking for a valuable pair of high-fidelity on-ear headphones.
