SteelSeries - Arctis 9X - Wireless gaming headset with a microphone for computers & Xbox One. The first thing to note is that its target audience is mainly gamers using the Xbox platform. The SteelSeries designers paid attention to them and worked closely with Microsoft experts to market this model. The result is a great combination, but a closer look at its features and capabilities is required.
One of the most important features of the SteelSeries premium headsets is their exemplary spatial and virtual imaging in every game. The latest Arctis 9X is no exception. In fact, users have a complete multi-channel system, so they can’t do without Windows Sonic Spatial Audio.
SteelSeries ARctis 9X High-End Wireless Gaming Headset Review
1. Overview - not finished
Type: Over-ear Noise Cancelling Headphones | Bluetooth: 4.0 | Battery: 30 Hours | Charging: 4 Hours | Drivers: Dynamic | Drivers-Size: 45 mm | Weight: 385g
The SteelSeries Arctis 9X comes in a green and white box with a front “Xbox One & Windows 10” label and a quote from IGN: “From the masters of the best high-end gaming headset“. We’ll see in this review whether these claims are true or not. Inside the package, the headset is accompanied by a standard micro USB charging cable and a small envelope with instructions.
The gaming headset immediately makes a nice impression. The cups are made of soft-touch plastic and are fascinating to hold in hand. The soft, porous pads make the headphones comfortable to wear for many hours, and I watched five episodes of Netflix Witch in one go without any pressure on my ears.
The earcups are made of high-density plastic and have a special rubber coating on their outer surface to hold them firmly. The cups are designed with sealed soundproofing. They’re attached with steel hoops and can be adjusted easily. By tightening or loosening them, they can be adjusted to the size of your head. It is not as pleasant as an adjustable size frame, but it is certainly more durable and capable.
The main controls of the SteelSeries Arctis 9X are located at the side ends of the shell. On the right side, there are volume controls and a mute microphone button. Below are the power and pairing buttons, including the 3.5 mm USB microphone and mini-jack for wired headphones. For the wired connection, no cable was included.
There is a volume control on the left ear to balance voice calls and games and a retractable microphone underneath. The most common controls are arranged so that you can easily press them with your thumb or index finger, reducing the risk of confusion.
To synchronize the SteelSeries Arctis 9X with the Xbox One, press and hold the pairing button on the console itself. This is nearly the same as turning on the gamepad for the first time. If you haven’t already used it with another device, it will automatically begin to pursue and connect to the console when you turn it on.
The SteelSeries Arctis 9X is compatible with Windows Sonic Surround. To achieve this effect, you must add it to your system settings. As with other similar headphones, the volume is achieved by increasing the midrange and adding several additional effects such as bass and treble separation. Ambient sound allows for deeper immersion and brings the sound source closer to the character.
The clarity of the sound is remarkable. For example, in the audio stream’s overall quality, you can clearly hear the step or shot’s direction. This additional immersion makes the game more engaging and gives you more control in online battles.
Connecting the Arctis 9X to a Microsoft console is simple: just press the pairing button on the Xbox, and the connection is established after a certain amount of time. Of course, Bluetooth is also supported, and the headset supports simultaneous calls from multiple sources, so you won’t miss any important calls.
With this model, the guaranteed wireless distance coverage is 6 meters, enough for playback, even in a very spacious room. The headset can be charged from any device with a USB port and can be used continuously for up to 20 hours after being fully charged.
Another intriguing feature of the Arctis 9X is that it runs simultaneously on Xbox 1 or PC and smartphone. So you can type on the console and listen to music, podcasts or audiobooks on your phone at the same time without any unnecessary focus. You can also use any ordinary mobile voice call, such as Discord or Skype, instead of the default Xbox One call. This is a very useful feature, and you won’t want to go back to another headset after a few days of use.
Besides, the Arctis 9X SteelSeries battery lasts approximately 20 hours of continuous use. This kind of durability is very satisfying. However, it is not easy to measure the exact run time, as the headset does not display the percentage of charge, but only the battery consumption on a separate icon.
One of the most important aspects of any headset is the transmission of voice through the microphone. Microphones have always been the strong point of the SteelSeries headsets. The company’s models are equipped with the world’s best two-way ClearCast microphone for player voice playback and great noise reduction and are Discord certified. The microphone’s recording quality is good with nearly perfect clarity. Additionally, it also blocks unwanted noise.
Regarding the sound quality of SteelSeries Arctis 9X, the wireless gaming headset features powerful neodymium magnets, and dynamic drivers with 40 mm drivers provide powerful bass and great detail across the entire frequency spectrum. Second, numerous pre-programmed equalizer settings can be activated by pressing the on/off button on the glass. The analog-connected model has a sensitivity of 98 dB and an impedance of 32 ohms.
The Arctis 9X Steelseries, like most gaming headsets, is not as nice for listening to music. Without Windows Sonic support, the frequency range is slightly more balanced, allowing you to enjoy your favorite music more comfortably.
With regards to the sound response of the Arctis 9X SteelSeries Xbox One gaming headset, they have nice, smooth bass, but some songs may miss them a little. If you want to listen to music occasionally, these headphones are adequate. The clear highs let you hear all your instruments instead of mixing them all at once. Still, the swelling of the midrange flattens the melody a little in contrast to more musical headphones.
Even though the headphones’ main use is the game, we couldn’t help but see if the headphones can play the music properly. The headsets aren’t exceptional in this segment. However, the developers emphasized a pleasant listening experience that benefits long gaming sessions that usually last several hours, which spares the user of the sound fatigue. Of course, the music should be listened to with a flat EQ. In other modes, the frequency balance is still very distorted.
Note that the volume level is lower when connected to a phone than when you connect headphones to a computer or Xbox. Note that the volume increases when connected through a 3.5 mm jack, but the quality is much lower than when connected wirelessly. Overall, the headphones sound really good for your category.
When companies like SteelSeries and Microsoft come in, you know you’re getting a nice product. The Arctis 9X SteelSeries are versatile and can handle game soundtracks and music just as well.
Arctis 9X SteelSeries are wonderful wireless gaming headsets for Xbox One that provide surround sound in games and allow you to hear all sounds even in the most intense scenes. It’s a great solution if you want to be more immersed in the world of games or if you want to find your opponents through sound in online games on your Xbox One or PC; you can use the headset on both devices at the same time, making it the ultimate solution. The headset is also equipped with a cool microphone that blocks all unwanted sounds, making your conversation partner happy.
